An affix is a morpheme or group of letters added in from of a word (prefix) or at the end of a word (suffix) to change its meaning or grammatical category, or to provide inflection. In this case, the suffix -<em>ism </em>forms a noun: from the noun <em>patriot </em>to <em>patriotism</em>, which means nationalism.
