Mainly, from tribute taxes.

The cities they took from the Persians paid annual tribute to Athens, greatly enriching the city. The Athenian Greeks also used the conquered areas as colonies, giving land grants to Greek citizens in the conquered areas, as there was little land left in Attica (where Athens is) that wasn't already owned.
The tribute was in the form of grain, precious metals, and work products (leather, pottery, etc.) which Athens usually traded (except for the grain) to further enrich the city.

Were American Indian attacks on the Oregon Trail more than on the Santa Fe Trail?
Kisachek [45]
The Santa Fe Trail was America’s first commercial highway. Traders established the trail—which connected Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico and covered some 900 miles of the Great Plains—in 1821. Before its demise due to the completion of the Santa Fe railroad, the Santa Fe Trail served as a thoroughfare for countless traders, pioneers and America’s military, and it played a crucial role in America’s westward expansion.
