i was on the apex and i got the answer wrong, however hopefully you haven't answered just yet and my answer helps you get it correct
They missed the safety and comfort of home. They were forgetting about flying once the left and couldn't "breathe the sweet scent of Africa." Africa is their homeland and they are now separated.
