Some Americans disagreed with Thomas Jefferson’s decision to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France because it was add more land to the South. This would create a more powerful south compared to the north.

On a political level, Jefferson was conflicted about it because he didn’t necessarily believe that the president had the authority to make such a purchase, so he believed he might have been setting a dangerous precedent. Congress retroactively approved the sale later so it was not a big deal.

As far as the American pioneers on the frontier, I’m not sure that they cared very much. They were always hard to control, just because of how far away they were from established authority. Just as Americans poured into Texas when it was still Mexican territory, they crossed the Mississippi and settled on the other side, France or no France.

After the purchase, however, Louisiana suddenly became very interesting to Americans. It became the 2nd largest city in the United States after New York, and remained the 2nd largest city in the country until the Civil War. The people living there were not necessarily thrilled to see a bunch of “Yankees” showing up and pushing them around, as they saw it. But it was never enough of a conflict to start a war or anything like that.
