Benedictine monks lived in monastries in Italy. They took vows of poverty, silence, chastitsy, and obedience. They were forbidden to own property, leave the monastary, or become involved with society. The monks spent their time praying, reading/writing histories and religious texts, and working on their craft. They often sold the crafts they produced, such as wine, caskets, and vestments.

Franciscan friars lived in friaries in Italy. They took vows of poverty, chastitsy, and obedience. They were forbidden to own property and had to live on what people gave them. They spent their time travelling, attending to the poor and the sick, preaching, and praying. They were encouraged to live among the people that they served. The friars were supportive of church reform. Many Catholic traditions come from the friars, like the Stations of the Cross and the nativity.

Why did countries not allow Jewish refugees asylum?
Serga [27]

Like most other countries, the United States did not welcome Jewish refugees from Europe. In 1939, 83% of Americans were opposed to the admission of refugees. Right in the middle f the great depression, many feared the burden that immigrants could place on the nation’s economy; refugees, in most cases were prevented from bringing any money or assets with them, were an even greater cause for concern. Indeed, as early as 1930, President Herbert Hoover reinterpreted immigration legislation barring those  to include even those immigrants who were capable of working, reasoning that high unemployment would make it impossible for immigrants to find jobs.

Fancy is the key word to describe the Baroque Period (1600-1750). The music was fancy, deco- rated, and ornate as were the clothes, buildings, and visual arts. The word Baroque comes from an Italian word meaning bizarre, but is better translated as fancy or ornamented.
