Dear Jill,

Please excuse me for not writing earlier - I was very busy helping my parents.

Anyways, how are you today? Did you have a good weekend?

I had a great one!

I went outside with my dog for a walk. It was absolutely amazing to enjoy the quiet. Because of the current situation I have more time to spend with my family. I absolutely love it! We play board games and talk about everything what comes in mind.

I'm sorry to let you know this but my neighbour, Mr Vialpando, who gave us sweets everytime he saw us, died. May he rest in peace.

I forgot something: I shall send greetings from Dan to you!

That's all I wanted to tell you. Please reply to this E-Mail as soon as you read it.

See you soon!

*YOUR NAME*

I'm sorry if there are any mistakes, I'm from Germany and English is not my native language.

Which sentence in this excerpt from Mark Twain's "The €1,000,000 Bank-Note" is an example of satire? Answer choices are visible
maksim [4K]

"Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything."

  • This sentence in this excerpt from Mark Twain's "The €1,000,000 Bank-Note" is an example of satire.
  • Satire is a literary device used in exposing and criticising people's foolishness or vices through humour, exaggeration, irony, or ridicule, especially in relation to current politics and other controversial topics.
  • Here, the author describes how not just trivial but even important issues related to Bank of England are decided by "a bet". So, the author cricisizes the English way of settling important issues without great consideration.

At the beginning of the essay, swift explains the anticipated results before revealing the actual proposal. explain the rhetoric
denis23 [38]
By explaining the great results of his proposal, he is preparing the reader to agree with him.

By writing that his proposal will end hunger and poverty, the reader is eager to hear his plan and is predisposed to agree with him. When the reader learns of his actual plan, however, the reader is moved to shock.

The overall effect is that other plans to end poverty and hunger -- which Swift dismisses as ineffective -- now appear more reasonable.
