create a presentation based on the role of Harlem in Baldwin’s life and in the story, paying attention to the world of jazz. Res
ValentinkaMS [17]

Answer:

Harlem looked like a place where there was only bad influence for young people and teenagers. Going into drugs and dropping school were the common in this age.  It sounded sad, if we could say, the environment was either playing on the street or getting drugs.  For Baldwin it was working with young students and finding similarities between his brother and his students.

Explanation:

Life in the Bronx has always been difficult.   People have poor living conditions and children are not supervised because they have working mothers or a single parent at home.  The wander around with friends, who are in the same situation, and are not much help.  They get into drugs easily and it is very hard for them to continue their studies.  Jazz was like a hope, something with which one got deeply involved and could express one´s feelings.  In this case Jazz saved Baldwin´s brother from getting lost in the world of drugs.

In The Great Gatsby, what does F. Scott Fitzgerald suggest about the state of the American Dream, the people who pursue it, and
Bad White [126]
F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the decline of the American Dream in his book The Great Gatsby. The American dream was first manifested in the Declaration of Independence in the early days of American settlement. Most immigrants were poor and the notion of the American Dream promised hope, happiness and equality. In the book, the values have shifted towards people getting as rich as they can and this can be observed in the behaviors the characters. No doubt, this new type of American Dream fails several times. It shows that there is still inequality and social discrimination as in the car-reselling scene between Tom and Wilson. Jay Gatsby is filled with hope to win the love of his life Daisy through this new kind of American Dream. He struggled hard to attain the status of the upper class. However, it failed tremendously.

Sandra lives in abject filth and squalor, with no friends or family around to support her. Would you describe her living situati
Luden [163]

Answer:

Yes. I will describe her living situation as wretched. This is because her living in abject filth and squalor denotes that she is very poor, unpleasant, miserable and unable to provide basic life's necessities. These are the marks of wretchedness.

Explanation:

Filth refers to something that is dirty, offensive and unpleasant. Squalor also means the condition or state of being extremely dirty and unpleasant. This happens as a result of poverty or neglect. These characteristics sends out the message that anyone in this type of living condition is wretched. Therefore, Sandra's living situation is characterized with wretchedness because it doesn't show any pleasantness.
