As we know everything is made up of atoms. Some of the atoms change into different type of atom over time. The original atom is called Parent and the new one as Daughter. Once the object like rock has reached a certain age, half of the Parent atoms turn into daughter atoms and in this way we can learn the age of a rock by counting the number of parent and daughter atoms.
