She wouldn’t ask her teacher for specific suggestions (C) because she has to do the research herself. She can’t make a list of books that she could use (B) because she needs to figure out what she is doing first. And she can’t just hop on her computer and look up the topic (A) she needs more information.

Instead of using "set off" used skyrocketed, or rocketed or left an impact or created a ripple effect, something around those lines. 
Also, if you want to say the question from the novel use a single quotation, ', instead of a double. It makes more sense that way.
