With the advancement of the technology, the modes of communication changed drastically over the years. Earlier, the people waited for days before they can be received emails and messages from their loved ones. He encountered many obstacles on his journey, and could even see Ithaca, when an ocean current carried many of his men out to sea, prolonging his return. When he got back, he disguised himself as a beggar to find information about what had happened. Then he attacked the suitors. A bunch of stuff happened (not necessary to your question) and he won back Ithaca.
