Initiated dissolution of monasteries. After his reign there were short reigns of Edward VI (1547-53 and Mary I (Bloody Mary, 1553-58) during which Catholic religion was not totally re-introduced. Henry VIII found very good successor in Elizabeth I. (+1603) who managed to give further extension to his style of politics.

England's King Henry VIII is best known for two things: His many wives and his decision to execute several of them. His decision to suppress the Roman Catholic Church, establishing the Church of England as the official religion of the nation. This act became known as the English Reformation

Henry VIII's Death

By the end of his life, Henry was obese. He had injured his leg in 1536, and this prevented him from exercising. The wound became ulcerated, and he died from natural causes in 1547.

Within weeks of his divorce to Anne of Cleves, Henry married the very young Catherine Howard, a first cousin of Anne Boleyn, in a private marriage on July 28, 1540. Henry, 49, and Catherine, 19, started out a happy pair.

Mary was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his first wife, the Spanish-born princess Catherine of Aragon. Henry separated from Catherine in 1531 and had his marriage to her annulled in 1533. Mary was declared illegitimate, and she was stripped of the title of princess.
