Demonstrative pronouns serve (like the other demonstrative pronouns) to indicate the distance, in space or time, between two things, between one person and one thing or between two people, and to show the objects according to their situation with respect to the speaker.
They allow to indicate three degrees of distance that are indicated with the adverbs: aquí, ahí y allí. This, that and that also have a feminine and plural form.
