Please Help!! It's American Literature
Juliette [100K]

Being taught to respect symbols of an upper-class life, Rodriguez becomes confused, identifying with two cultures and feels like an outsider in both worlds.

What happens in "Complexion"?

"Complexion" is a short story in a book by Richard Rodriguez, a Mexican-American author. In the story, Rodriguez tells us the story of how he was raised to be believe that his dark complexion (his dark skin) was a bad thing. He was taught to believe that dark skin belongs to those who are poor, who only perform manual work.

Growing up, Rodriguez resents his own appearance. Due to his complexion, he does not feel like he belongs among the upper-class. However, once he gets educated, he realizes he also does not belong among the poor, the lower-class.

Thus, Rodriguez identifies with two cultures, but feels like an outsider in both worlds. He is not rich, but he is not treated as poor. He is American, but he is also Mexican.

With the information above in mind, we can choose option A as the correct answer.
