After the Civil War ended in the United States, a lot of people turned their attention to what they called <em>social ills </em>such as Mormon polygamy and Alcohol consumption.

This led to the rise of <em>Dry factions </em>in both the Democratic and the Republican parties who wanted Alcohol to be illegal in the United States. To gain support, these factions formed alliances with Women suffrage movements as it was believed that women supported Prohibition as it reduced domestic violence at home.  

The cartoon <em>The Genii of Intolerance </em>is meant to warn Women's suffrage movements that they should not be supported by or linked to Prohibitionist groups as they were simply using them to get their way and when they were done would renegade on promises to support women's rights.
