The Haitian Revolution is the name for a series of interconnected armed conflicts that took place on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola from 1791 to 1804, which led to the termination of former French rule in the western part of the island, namely the colony of Saint- Domingue, that is, by establishing an independent state of Haiti.
It began as an uprising of predominantly black and mulatto slaves against French white slaveholders, largely fueled by revolutionary developments in France itself, that is, proclaimed ideals of human and civil rights that included the abolition of slavery.
The conflict was complicated by both factional clashes between the Haitians themselves, as well as the outbreak of the French revolutionary wars that caused Britain and Spain to become involved in the conflict in Haiti.
