La historia ha marcado que las distintas sociedades han respondido de diversas maneras a los procesos políticos y económicos que han moldeado sus formas de gobierno y organización de mercado.

Así, países que han fortalecido sus empresas y generado sociedades de consumo masificadas han tendido a adoptar sistemas de mercado: países como Estados Unidos, con grandes empresas radicadas en el país, necesitan del libre mercado para poder vender sus productos en el exterior, y fomentar el consumo para ubicar asimismo la producción en el mercado interno. Esta situación también se da en países como Japón, otro gran productor de bienes a nivel global.

En cambio, otros países han sufrido mayores turbulencias en cuanto a su desarrollo económico, que han determinado que el Estado tenga un mayor rol protectorio frente a los derechos y el bienestar de sus habitantes. Así, países como Alemania, cuya economía ha sufrido dos guerras mundiales en territorio propio, hiperinflación en el periodo de entreguerras y una división nacional particularmente difícil en el sector oriental del país, han determinado que el Estado no solo contemple la economía como un medio de acumulación de capital, sino como un medio a través del cual proteger a sus habitantes, adoptando modelos sociodemocráticos.
