It is an efficient process that helps students separate main ideas from key notes, starting by writing the main idea in a few words and developing it in the other column using abbreviations. At the end of a lecture, the student may analyze their notes and write a short summary of all the notes taken.

Charting is time consuming since it requires drawing graphs, which may divert the student's attention from the lecture.
SQRW is a method more fitting for studying from textbooks.
Recording takes the whole information from the lecture without analysis or summary, and it would be tiring to skip through the recording over and over in order to reach specific points.
