Upton Sinclair's novel <em>The Jungle</em> speaks about the many problems immigrants faced in the United States in the early XX century. A way the government can combat such problems for both workers and consumers is by passing laws that protect the workers (minimum wages, minimum age for work or the right to unionize and strike) and laws to regulate industrial practices like, in the case of the novel, meat packing and sanitary conditions for cattle.
