The townspeople seem to view Joe as an authoritative figure who deserves to be well-respected. As a natural leader with lots of confidence, Joe could easily establish himself in town. The townspeople were impressed by him and thought how lucky his wife, Jane, was. One example of how Joe asserted his authority was when he started to set a committee meeting in order to address the issues in town, such as the expansion of the town's land which he actually did. He was also able to build crossroads in time and upgrade other aspects in town, such as installing street lights.
