The townspeople seem to view Joe as an <em>authoritative figure who deserves to be well-respected. </em>As a natural leader with lots of confidence, Joe could easily establish himself in town. The townspeople were impressed by him and thought how lucky his wife, Jane, was. One example of how Joe asserted his authority was when <em>he started to set a committee meeting in order to address the issues in town,</em> such as the expansion of the town's land which he actually did. <em>He was also able to build crossroads </em>in time and upgrade other aspects in town, such as <em>installing street lights.</em>

The story centers on the life of Janie, an African American woman who married Joe as a second husband. Joe was considered a charming man who could easily manipulate young Janie. Little did the townspeople know what Janie actually felt as Joe's wife.
