Why did the United States oppose the government of President Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala?
mart [117]
The US wanted to remove Arbenz because he wanted to redistribute uncultivated land from large corporations and rich landowners amongst the peasants. President Truman approved the CIA's Operation PB/Success to remove Arbenz, with Guatemalan exiles. This plan failed because of the Sec. of state. The US then ordered all allies to suspend shipments for Guatemala, this caused Arbenz to order supplies from the Soviets; 400k acres of land was expropriated and owned by the United Fruit Company. President Eisenhower approved Operation PB and the CIA Lockheed P-38 sank a cargo ship containing tobacco and cotton. This caused the Guatemalan army to no longer support Arbenz, who signed his resignation.

Hope this helps!
