Answer:

The whole town reacted with such fervor which the author states was like a "nerve . . . pulsing and vibrating with the news".

Explanation:

John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" revolves around the character Kino, a pearl diver who discovered a pearl and thus, began his change of fortune from being super poor to becoming rich. The story is more of a parable that deals with the greed of man and the evils in society that only leads to more discrimination.

Kino and his wife Juana were living in dire poverty. Once when a scorpion stung their baby Coyotito, the doctor refused to treat him because they had no money to pay him for his services. In frustration, Kino went diving for oysters while his wife applied seaweed on their son's swollen shoulder. Kino found a huge pearl which he dubbed "the Pearl of the World". From then on, numerous misfortunes happened to them, thieves tried to break in and steal their pearl, traders tried to cheat them out of it. The whole neighborhood was abuzz with the enormous discovery, the whole town was <em>"pulsing and vibrating with the news"</em>, everyone trying to associate themselves with Kino, including the doctor who refused to treat them earlier.
