Why is reading so important
yuradex [85]
From time to time people have wondered why reading is important. There seems so many other things to do with one's time. Reading is important for a variety of reasons. We will look at some of those fundamental reasons below, but it is important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills is not a sign of low intelligence. For example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn't Read, is a very intelligent man. He graduated from High School and College, became a popular High School teacher and later a successful business man, all without being able to read. Many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading; although, when properly taught, most people can learn to read easily and quickly.

Which of the following choices best describes the type of appeal used in this quotation?
Virty [35]

There are three types of appeals or ways of persuasion: ethos, which persuades appealing to ethics; pathos, which appeals to emotion; and logos, which appeals to logic.

The sentence "I think that ’twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon.", uses facts to persuade. The civil rights movement is something that actually happened, and I gather from the sentence that this was said during that time. Both african americans and women were tired of the unjust treatment they receive(d) and began to protest. Since the sentence uses facts to persuade, the appeal used is logos.

Mandarinka [93]

The tone of the passage is loving (B).

The author is bragging about his or her little sister. The author is very proud of her and everything that she has accomplished. There is no part of the passage that would suggest that the author is angry with his or her sister, critical of her, or envious of her. The passage simply is stating the little sister's accomplishments.

Fall of the House of Usher, excerpt
pentagon [3]

Answer:

Ghastly pallor of the skin

Explanation:

The narrator states that when he saw Usher, he was startled by his appearance, because in addition to having his hair disheveled and his face down, he presented "Ghastly pallor of the skin" which was one of the main reasons that made the narrator so uncomfortable with what I was seeing. We can see, then, that Usher was not in good health, both mentally and physically.

"Fall of the House of Usher" is a short story written by Edgar Alan Poe and tells how Usher's house was languishing just like him, presenting a terrifying, hideous, evil and uncomfortable atmosphere and appearance.

Why are Shakespeare's plays considered difficult for modern students to
understand?
Ivahew [28]
The reason hun is because Shakespeare uses an early form of the English language. There are a few differences between today's English and Shakespeare's Early Modern English. He uses words such as thee, thy, lord, thou, art, etc which is complicated for us to understand. Also, many of Shakespeare's plays were written in iambic pentameter which makes his writings much more difficult to interpret. Another thing is that he invented new words in his writings, over 1,000 words he invented.
