The option that best describes characterization is D: The way a character is presented and developed. Characterization is understood as a literary device that is used to give details about the characters within a story. First of all, the characters are introduced and then the reader can start reaching conclusions by considering their behaviour. As the story goes on, the reader can also analyse the characters taking into account how the rest of the characters see them and how they interact with each other.

How does the author's use of direct and indirect characterization help the reader to visualize the character of Merridew?
zhenek [66]
1.) DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like.

a. Read how Golding describes Piggy in the beginning of the novel. He reveal's to us readers that Piggy is a shy boy who dons glasses and is fat (thus his nickname).

2.) INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.

a. A good example would be Jack. Golding described him as the eldest boy of the choir and many of the younger choir boys looked up to him and depended on him a great deal after the crash. What Golding didn't tell us was that Jack took his dictatorship seriously and he went too far with his role when he blindly killed Simon and he developed a thirst for blood.
Hope that helps ^-^

Which of the following is NOT a reason why authors and speakers consider their audience when crafting a text or speech?
tatyana61 [14]

The goal of designing a text or speech for the audience is to be well understood, convince them with your arguments, to entertain and keep them interested in the topic.

When an author develops a text or speech, it can come with new ideas, that may clash with the audience's ones. Bringing new thoughts and argumentation might incite critical thinking and change of minds; It is not necessarily ideal for the author to match the audience's opinions.

So, a. to make their own opinions closer to the audience's opinions is NOT a reason the authors consider the audience when crafting their texts or speeches.
