The Constitution requires that state constitutions maintain a republican form of government and therefore the states followed the three branch model set by the federal government.
The Constitution gave specific and implied powers to the states. To run the business of each state, they created state constitutions to organize their state system. Each state took on the three branch system to organize their state government. The executive branch has a governor as the state leader. The legislative branch in most states is also bicameral or has two houses mimicking the federal Congress. Lastly, the states created a judicial branch with a state supreme court with county and city court houses to support the local levels of the judicial branch.
