Selective breeding means selecting a particular species and making it grow artificially to inherit its traits. "Artificial selection" is commonly used term to represent this kind of breeding process. By following this process new organisms are developed with desirable characteristics. Generally Breeders select two parents having beneficial phenotypic traits to reproduce and yield offspring with similar traits.

The selective breeding is done on cow to produce lots of milk, on chickens to produce large eggs and on wheat plants to produce lots of grain.

The process of selective breeding is followed to develop livestock whose quality/behavior is more in demand.
