The Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee was one of the major organizations during the Civil Right Movements and it emerged in 1960 after the wave of sit-ins and other nonviolent disobendience actions in which the student communities were participating.

They got involved with the Voter Education Project in Southern States, participated in the freedom rides against segregation in public facilities, they participated in the 1963 March on Washington and, in general, they conducted direct actions all over the country.

Subsequently, the arrival of more fierce leaders promoted more aggresive actions within the movement.
