The city which is generally accepted as the first city of Mesoamerica is Monte Alban. Monte Alban is now an archeological site that is dated to be pre-Columbian (before Columbus explored it) in a municipality in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. It was an important socio-political and economic center for close to a thousand years and is situated on a low mountain range in a plain.
