Answer: They encourage African Americans to feel positive about themselves and their heritage.

Explanation:

In his poem "I, Too", Hughes explores the theme of racial discrimination, which was largely present in the society at the beginning of the 20th century.

The speaker of the poem claims his right to "sing America" - to be an equal part of the American society. He wants to point out that he is allowed to have patriotic feelings towards America, despite the fact that he is black. In this particular excerpt, the speaker argues that African American people are beautiful and should be proud of their heritage. Those that discriminate African Americans against will be ashamed when they realize what they have done.
