Answer:

As a book once said, "You can discern a tree based on it's fruits". That is one way to distinguish between a pine tree and a apple tree. An apple tree produces apples, a pine tree produces pines.

Another way to discern, is based on how the trees look. If there are only these two trees, then the apple tree would be the shorter, lower-hanging one, while the pine tree would be a taller, straighter tree.
