The english statesman, George Calvert, projected the founding of the North American province of *Maryland*, in an effort to find a sanctuary for practicing Roman Catholics. The charter made by George made *Maryland* the first colony controlled by a single proprietor. Joint-stock companies controlled the other colonies, but the Maryland charter granted rare autonomy and control to the Calvert family. Lord Baltimore (George) could govern the colony similar to an independent country.

Which countries on both sides of the Atlantic experienced revolutions during the late 18th and early 19th centuries
pav-90 [236]

Answer: in Portugal (1820) it was so-called "Liberal Revolution" (Revolucao Liberal), in Spain (1812 and then so-called "Liberal Three Years, 1820-1823), in Argentina (1810) so-called "May Revolution" which led to proclamation of independence (1816), in Brazil (1822), in France (1789)

Explanation:

1. Portuguese royal family left Portugal for Brazil (1807) because of appoaching Napoleonian forces (general Junot). Then Portugal became British protectorate (lord Beresford). In 1820 Revolution took place not only to give constitution to the country and to limit absolute powers of king, but also to end British protectorate and bring heir apparent back (John VI). John VI got back and signed the constitution (1824).

2. in Spain 1812, first draft of constitution was made (city of Cadiz). It is where tradition of Spanish liberalism started. At that time Spain was occupied by Napoleonian France and defeated in 1813. In 1814 (Congress of Vienna) Bourbon dynasty was restored (Fernando VII). Liberals (constitutionalists) managed to impose constitution in 1820 but this period lasted only till 1823. Then absolutism was restored again.

3. In Argentina in 1810 "May Revolution" took place (inspired by ideals of French revolution) which led later to independence of Argentina (defeat of Spanish royalists) in 1816.

4. In Brazil, separation from Portugal was quite peaceful (1822) because took place within royal family. Royal heir apparent (Pedro, son of John VI) reject to return to Portugal which created quite a tension between Lisbon and Rio. Later on, he proclaimed independence (September, 7, 1822).

5. in France revolution took place in 1789. In fact it was a consequence of irresponsible economics of French royal court (Bourbons). To impose higher taxes the king Louis XVI had to call for General States. But the authority of king, and all the monarchic state became quite fragile. Revolution started already at General States when the Third State decided to form "National Assembly".

Which branch of mathematics did the Egyptians use?
Pavlova-9 [17]

Ancient Egyptians used Geometry as well as arithmetic to develop their duties as civil managers. It's clearly seen that they used geometrical shapes on their holy landscapes such as Pyramids, Temples, and obelisks.

In addition, they used this branch of mathematics to measure distances. especially on the land survey at the Nile fields, after floods, in order to define their limits. However, their methods to calculate areas were not exact at all, especially on shapes other than rectangles.

The Supreme Court's decision in Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) incorporated which provision of the bill of rights?
Alina [70]

Answer:

GIDEON V. WAINWRIGHT (1963)

Summary

Gideon v Wainwright (1963), a landmark Supreme Court case that under the Sixth Amendment requires states to provide counsel in criminal cases to any defendants unable to afford their own attorney. In 1961, Clarence Earl Gideon was charged with breaking and entering in a Florida poolroom and once in trial, asked the court to appoint him an attorney. Prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling, indigent defendants were not provided counsel unless charged of a capital offence. Given a 5 year prison sentence, Gideon felt unfairly treated by the courts and filed a writ of habeas corpus to the Florida Supreme Court, but was denied. Gideon then issued an appeal to the United States Supreme Court. In the unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Gideon’s trial was unconstitutional due to the lack of a defense attorney at his trial. The Court argued that the Sixth Amendment requires a state to provide a defense lawyer because lawyers are vital to a “fair trial.” The Supreme Court noted that federal government as well as the states are bound to Sixth Amendment, which ultimately lead to extending the right to counsel for indigent defendants. Therefore, the Court reasoned, its requirements could not turn on such a distinction. Therefore, the right to legal representation was acknowledged to be a right essential to due process in almost all cases.

In a major victory for indigent persons, the ruling created a precedent for future cases through the creation of the public defender system. The implementation of this system has been very beneficial for the indigent community, but it also has created many issues in regards to workload and representation for defenders. More than half of criminal cases are represented by public defenders and the caseload increases each year. Overcome with heavy workloads, public defenders does not possess the abundant amount of time that the client deserves to adequately review and prep for the trial. As a result, this issue forces many cases to reach plea deals.
