Which sentence in this excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich shows that Ivan Ilyich’s daughter, Lisa, does not emp

athize with her father’s suffering? She began to remind him of his medicines, but he turned his eyes towards her with such a look that she did not finish what she was saying; so great an animosity, to her in particular, did that look express. "For Christ's sake let me die in peace!" he said. She would have gone away, but just then their daughter came in and went up to say good morning. He looked at her as he had done at his wife, and in reply to her inquiry about his health said dryly that he would soon free them all of himself. They were both silent and after sitting with him for a while went away. "Is it our fault?" Lisa said to her mother. "It's as if we were to blame! I am sorry for papa, but why should we be tortured?" The doctor came at his usual time. Ivan Ilyich answered "Yes" and "No," never taking his angry eyes from him, and at last said: "You know you can do nothing for me, so leave me alone."

The answer is "It's as if we were to blame! I am sorry for papa, but why should we be tortured?"

Explanation:

In the excerpt, the interaction between Ivan Ilyich and her daughter is illustrated. About this, it can be said at the beginning of the excerpt, the daughter shows compassion and empathy because she helps him with the medicine "She began to remind him of his medicines" and even asks how he feels. However, due to the harsh actions of Ivan, at the end, the daughter changes her attitude and shows a lack of sympathy as she says "It's as if we were to blame! I am sorry for papa, but why should we be tortured?", which shows she is upset about her father being sick and tired of all the situation, and therefore does not feel compassion or empathy.

What term is used to describe elements of writing such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and capitalization?
sineoko [7]
I believe that the most fitting answer for this question would be D., "conventions." All styles and periods of literature have their own conventions for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization. They change over the centuries and between different writers. You can also find this answer by using the process of elimination. Clarity, context, and coherence do not really have anything to do with these things. Hope this helps.

In which sentence do the subject and verb agree?
Ganezh [65]

Answer: Marlo, the oldest in the family, often reads to her little brother and sister.

Explanation:

I'm sorry your question was not answered sooner. I doubt you will still need this answer but for the sake of others I went ahead to answer.

When a subject and a verb are said to agree, it means that the verb is the same number as the subject. This means that if the subject is in plural, the verb must be in plural as well and if the subject is singular, the verb must be singular as well.

<u><em>''Marlo''</em></u><em> </em> is a singular subject and the verb that would complement this is ''<em><u>reads'' </u></em><em> </em>because it is a singular number as well.

Read the passage below. Then explain how the use of a third-person omniscient point of view helps develop the characters in the
vesna_86 [32]

Answer:     The use of a third-person point of view helps develop the characters of this story by showing the thoughts of all the characters. For example, when Milo was finished playing his movie for his friends, it shares his thoughts. “Milo was excited to hear their thoughts on his first short film but was nervous just the same.” All of his friends disliked his movie, and you could tell because they were all thinking about how it was the worst movie, or drifting off. Like how in the text it says “Britt kept thinking that this was the worst movie she'd ever seen, like it was made in 10 minutes on someone's smartphone. Clay had drifted off halfway through and had become more concerned by a bird that was flapping outside the basement window.” That is how the use of a third-person omniscient point of view helps develops the characters.
