When you are a child, if you grow up in an abusive household, you learn to be more aggressive. However, if you have a loving household, you're more likely to be considerate of others. There are many other examples, such as someone smiling to you could save your life, while someone being rude could end it. It only takes one gesture to change someone's world.
Why does John resist the narrator's attempts to stimulate her mind and express her thoughts? He thinks it will make her condition worse. He wants to be the creative one in their marriage. He thinks it will keep her from more productive work.
<em>Writers use genres because of the cognitive and social work they accomplish. Using the patterns of a genre accepted by readers for accomplishing their purposes allows them to establish a working relationship with readers. But familiarity with genres can also make life easier for writers.</em>
