As part of the division of federal powers in the United States and under the system of checks and balances, the Judicial branch relies on the Supreme Court. The other two federal branches are the legislative branch that is the US Congress and the executive branch that is the President of the US.

The federal court system in the US is divided into three parts: the Supreme Court that is the highest court in the nation. Courts of Appeal. And the district courts. The Supreme Court receives thousands of cases every year and it only can revise between 300 to 350. Most cases come to the Supreme Court on appeal from lower courts.
