Samuel Johnson was an english writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer.
He attended to Pembroke College in Oxford but just fo one year due to lack of funding that forced him to leave. He worked as a teacher and after that he moved to London and began to wrote for a magazine named "The Gentleman´s Magazine". Besides for that he also wrote poetry, a play and a biography about Mr. Richard Savage.
After nine years of work he published "A Dictionary of The English Language" on 1755. Untill the completion of the "Oxford English Dictionary" 150 years later Johnson´s was the pre-eminent british dictionary.

This can be misunderstood because, actually, the biography of Johnson was written by a friend of him named James Boswell. Johnson´s work is the second most quoted in the british literature righ after Shakespeare´s. In the years following his death he began to be recognised as having had a lasting effect on literary criticism, and he was claimed by some to be the only truly great critic of English Literature.
