Conversations between characters are often captured and edited using shot/reverse shot method.
Dialogues are conversations between 2 or a lot of characters. If there's just one character speaking, it's referred to as a monologue, that is usually used in plays.
A reverse shot method starts with an effort of a character, and so cuts to an effort of what or that character is staring at (the reverse of the angle from the primary shot), and eventually cuts back to the initial shot to indicate the character's reaction.
