Answer:

The communists targeted the main South Vietnamese cities during the Tet Offensive.

Explanation:

On January 30, 1968, Communist soldiers began infiltrating between the peasants of six different provinces and then attacking government buildings and barracks with portable weapons and mortar shells. The American forces were alerted and the Vietnamese were expected to return, but by night most of the infiltrators had fallen or been taken prisoner, so it was believed that this was not the prelude to the great offensive announced by the intelligence services.

During the night of 30 to 31, suddenly, 84,000 combatants commanded by the leaders Chi Fu Lua and HoChi Minh resumed attacks throughout the country. On February 1, the Communists were already inside Saigon, they had attacked 36 of the 44 provincial capitals, five of the six autonomous cities and 64 of the 242 district capitals.

The imperial city of Vietnam, Hue, was totally in the hands of the communists. Even the areas considered safe were also attacked. So the coastal province south of Saigon was shot, the hospital riddled and several grenades hit the building.

In the rest of the country, the guerrillas barricaded themselves in the positions taken and awaited the counterattack with all the weapons at their disposal.
