I would say that the example of satire among these options is d. Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything.
Twain is criticizing and mocking the English for settling everything in such a trivial manner as betting.

Answer: d. Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything.

Explanation: A satire is the use of irony, humor or exaggeration in order to make a critique about something fool or bad of an individual or a society. In the given excerpt from Mark Twain's "The £1,000,000 Bank-Note" we can see an example of satire, when the speakers says that the brothers had had a fight or an argument, but they had made a bet to reach an agreement, so, in this way he criticizes this "English" way to settle everything.

What was it like to be a wife in the Victorian era?
Alex Ar [27]

Answer:

Very limited to say the least, the role of a wife and husband were very defined.

Explanation:

Women were generally expected to marry and perform household and motherly duties rather than seek formal education. Even women who were not successful in finding husbands were generally expected to remain uneducated, and to take a position in childcare. The women didn't control their own finances and were expected to tell their husband's what they spent and so forth.

Which of the following sentences has a subject/verb agreement problem?
igor_vitrenko [27]
Let us dissect each sentence to tell which of these does not follow the rules for subject-verb agreement.

A.) The subject is 'each of the students' while the verb is 'is'. More particularly, the verb refers to 'each' which is singular. So, this is correct.

B.) The subject is 'student' while the verb is 'were'. The word 'were' is the paste tense of are which is used for a plural subject. But since student is singular, then the verb should have been 'was'. So, this is incorrect.

C.) The subject is 'my dog and my cat' which pertains to two nouns, thus it is plural. It agrees with its plural verb 'are'.

D.) The subject is 'Tom' while the verb is 'does'. Both are intended for singular use. So, this is correct.

Therefore, the answer to this is letter B.
