Answer:

After the American Civil War, sharecropping began in the South because the workers of the farms were mainly slaves. As a consequence of the American Civil War, the slaves were freed so there were large farms that no longer provide labor. Poor European-Americans and the slaves who lived in the South had no work and no property so they could not grow the land. In return, they received some crops that were raised.

Explanation:

Here is the timeline of sharecropping history in the United States to make it easy to understand:

• After Civil War

Sharecropping in the South became widespread because of the economic agitation which is caused by the civil war. Sharecropping itself is a way to make a living for the poor black and whites farmers. They make a living from others’ land. Landowners provided seeds, equipment, housing, land, and mules. While local traders provide supplies on credit and food.

• 1880s

In 1880s white farmers became sharecroppers, but the system was different from the tenant farmer who rented the land. They provided his mule, equipment, and obtained half of the crop.

• 1865s

In January 1865s, the policy which was referred to as a Mule and Forty Acres was made. President Andrew Johnson controlled all land which were under federal control in the summer of 1865s. So, landlords and plantation in the South regained their land but they don’t have enough labor force.

• 1930s and 1940s

Increasing mechanization essentially ends the profit-sharing institution in the United States. After the mechanization of agricultural work, traditional sharecropping had been declined and became economical in the mid-20th century.
