maxonik [38]

Which celebration from Antigua Guatemala is the most important of the hemisphere for many of its people?

What did the Mayans discover before the europeans?

What does the traditional clothes of the Guatemalan people show?

What does a huipil show with its design and colours?

Explanation:

1. The word "Ixim" is a common word of the Mayan Qʼeqchiʼ language which means Corn.

2. Rigoberta Menchú  is a political and human rights activist from Guatemala. She belongs to the indigenous community K'iche´. She has been an advocate for Guatemala's indigenous people during and after the Guatemalan Civil War (1960 - 1996), and promoter of indigenous rights in the international community. She's was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.

3. The Quetzal  has been Guatemala's national bird since 1871, and it's found on both Guatemala's national flag and shield. It's celebrated each year on September 5. It plays an important role in the myths of the region. It was considered a divine bird by Mesoamericans pre columbian civilizations.

4. The Quetzal is the name of Guatemalan currency, named after its national bird. The origin of the name can be traced to the ancient Mayan culture, that used the tail feathers of the Quetzal as currency. It was introduced in 1925, and replaced the Peso.

5. The Mayans were architects of great cities. Probably the most common and easily recognizable Mayan buildings are the stepped Pyramids, built with carved stone to create a stairway design. Each pyramid was dedicated to a deity. Pyramids were often the center of religious, commercial and bureaucratic power. Many were built as a tomb for powerful rulers as well. Mayan pyramids have a great variety of shapes and functions.

6. Antigua Guatemala is a city in Guatemala. The celebration of Easter, or Holy Week in Antigua Guatemala is its biggest and most important celebration. It honors the memory of the passion and death of Christ trough processions depicting Jesus Christ stations of the cross. It received the title of Intangible cultural heritage.

7. The Mayans were a very advanced civilization whose accomplishments surpassed the ones from the western world for thousands of years. They had a very complex and complete understanding of astronomy, and their calendar and calculations of the solar year were more accurate than the Gregorian calendar, which is the common calendar used by western civilizations. In mathematics, they invented the number zero 1700 years before Europeans received the concept from Arabian mathematicians. Mayans also knew to make elastic materials, by developing the vulcanization process 3000 years before Charles Goodyear did it for automobile tires.Mayans made elastic from latex and mixed it with other plant substances.

8. Traditional Guatemalan clothes are very colorful and are a representation of the cultural richness of the country. Some represent religious aspects, others show the sacred calendar, and many were inspired by the impacts of the spanish colonization.

9. The Huipil is the most common traditional item of clothing from the indigenous people in the south of Mexico and Central America. They are decorated with colorful designs woven into the fabric. The style generally indicates the ethnicity and community of the person wearing it, as each have their method of making the fabric and decorating it. Ceremonial Huipils are the most complex and elaborate and are only used for weddings, burials, women of high rank, and even to dress the statues of saints.
