Question:

Dressing the Part – Frances Benjamin Johnston, above, might have raised a few eyebrows when she donned a man’s suit and a fake moustache for this self-portrait in the late 1800s. But the groundbreaking photographer was used to operating in a man’s world.

How do this photo and caption enhance the information provided in the book?

A. They connect the book’s ideas about the American bicycle industry.

B. They offer an example of wealthy society’s enthusiasm for bicycles.

C. They provide insight about the English influence on American bicycles.

D. They emphasize the idea that bicycles helped blur gender roles.

Answer:

The correct answer is D) They emphasize the idea that bicycles helped blur gender roles.

Explanation:

It is safe to say that the bicycle disrupted the social system as its popularity and adoption gave more freedom of expression and transportation to the female gender.

Suffice it to say that in the 18th century and prior to the invention of the bicycle, women were not as vocal, outspoken, and liberal as they are today.

Sue Macy the author of "Wheels of Change" makes a connection between this newfound technology and how it allowed girls and women to do things they couldn't do before.

For instance, if women could use the bicycle as a means of transport, then they could definitely use it as a form of sports.

History has it that with these developments, came a backlash from the male chauvinists. Some of their argument rested on how it was unladylike to move around on such a vehicle.

Of course, these didn't enervate the course of history.

Cheers

30th March 2021,

Tuesday,

9:30 AM,

Dear Diary,

Yesterday, I became a part of an exciting soccer match between Rochester Rhinos and Real Monarch. I and my friends were really excited about it as it was the decider of the series. It would determine who would lift the 'David Trophy' home. We reached the ground earlier and took our seats along with some popcorns and snacks. The match began sharp at 10 and the Rhinos scored five goals back to back in the first half. It seemed that it would be a completely one-sided match but the comeback by the Real Monarch was extensively surprising and a delight to watch. The captain of Real Monarch 'Steve Joseph' scored a hat-trick to take the game in his favor. The audiences were really in awe to see him. In the last two minutes, the scores were level and it became very intense. The ball was being passed from one player to another and we were biting our nails thinking what would happen next. Last Moment, Thomas hit a goal beating the goal-keeper to take his team Real Monarch to the victory. We really enjoyed it a lot and it was a terrific match.

Read the excerpt from Julius Caesar, act 1, scene 2.
Eva8 [605]

Answer:

I believe that the correct answer is the third one: <em>arrogance</em>. The phrase <em>growing feathers</em> represents arrogant tone in the speaker.

Explanation:

When reading that particular line: "<em>These growing feathers plucked from Caesar's wing / Will make him fly an ordinary pitch,</em>" we can feel the arrogance in the tone of the speaker. Specially, when reading the word <em>plucked</em>, like the feathers were stolen from Caesar, like he feels proud of it. It represents an arrogant tone in FLAVIUS.
