This excavation method is usually carried out in the mining sites, and also to make a reservoir, dam, and pumping of water, this method is efficiently applied. It is carried out more extensively in open-cast mining and underground mining.

There are various hazards and risks in working at the excavation sites. Some of them are as follows-

• The surface materials may collapse any time due to the weight of the overburden, as a result of which the people working under it may be highly affected.
• Low amount of oxygen is usually present in the subsurface, as a result of which it becomes difficult for many of them to breathe.
• In the case of underground coal mines, a sudden occurrence of fire can cause great damage to the people working at a certain depth.

Out of all these, the major risk associated with the excavation method is the subsidence of the materials that are present on the surface, which can cause a tremendous effect on many people working below it.
