For about one hundred years, more than two thousand and four hundred years ago, Athen, the capital of Greece, had a Direct Democracy in which <em>all citizens vote on rules and laws.</em>

Each year, five hundred names were drawn from a pool of all the citizens of Athens. They have to serve for one year and were responsible for making new rules or make changes to old laws. Nothing becomes law until all citizens in Athen had the chance to vote yes or no.

<em>In those times neither women, children or slaves were citizens.</em>
