According to your Cartesians [followers of Descartes], everything is performed by an impulsion, of which we have very little not

ion; and according to Sir Isaac Newton, it is by an attraction, the cause of which is as much unknown to us. At Paris you imagine that the earth is shaped like a melon, or of an oblique figure; at London it has an oblate one. A Cartesian declares that light exists in the air; but a Newtonian asserts that it comes from the sun in six minutes and a half. . . . The very essence of things is totally changed. . . . How furiously contradictory are these opinions!
What is the main idea of this passage?

Sir Isaac Newton is the greatest scientist of this era.
Light comes from the sun in fewer than seven minutes.
The followers of Descartes know more than those who follow Newton.

Answer:

People still don’t understand how the world works.

Explanation:

The main idea that this passage wants to convey is that people still do not understand how the world works. This is shown by the fact that people disagree on the fundamentals of science. The author tells us that, while some people (Cartesians) hold a particular opinion, another group (Newtonians) disagree and interpret the world differently. The fact that such different opinions exist supports the idea that we are still learning about the way in which the world works.

Using this table, which group of people would have been MOST LIKELY to relocate to the West coast of the United States in the 1
bekas [8.4K]
It would have been more likely for c)Chinese seeking railroad jobs to move to the West Coast. This was due to many rural Chinese men looking for a better life and to escape the Chinese Civil War. Since the West Coast was the closest, they would cross the Pacific Ocean and work on the railroads in California along the most Western part of the United States.

Who would have been happier with their representation in the house, small states or big states? why?
Naily [24]
I believe you are talking about when the US was discussing whether they should have equal representation in the legislative house or unequal representation based on population density. The small states would have been happy with equal representation because that would mean their state interests would not be overruled by larger state populations, such as Virginia (back then, Virginia had a lot of people :P). Larger states would have been more happy with unequal representation based on population density because they thought it was unfair to have smaller states be equally represented when they have more people being represented in the house. IN the end, the compromise was the House of Representatives and the Senate in the legislative branch of the government. The HoR had unequal representation based on population density and the Senate had equal representation from each state.
