Personification is the action of giving living characteristics to something that is not living. An example of personification can be found in "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in the quote, "his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream." Personification is used because shadows cannot shout, this is a living quality being applied to a nonliving thing, a shadow. Alliteration is also used, because of the repetition of words that begin with "s."
