<u>Chiaroscuro</u>: Chiaroscuro is a monochrome picture made by using several different shades of the same color.

<u>Sfumato</u>: The technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms

How is Chiaroscuro used: In the graphic arts, the term chiaroscuro refers to a particular technique for making a woodcut print in which effects of light and shade are produced by printing each tone from a different wood block. The technique was first used in woodcuts in Italy in the 16th century, probably by the print maker Ugo da Carpi.

How is sfumato used:The technique is a fine shading meant to produce a soft transition between colors and tones, in order to achieve a more believable image. It is most often used by making subtle gradations that do not include lines or borders, from areas of light to areas of dark.
