Jim Crow laws were laws implemented in the Southern United States after the era of Reconstruction. The goal of these laws was to limit the rights of African-American citizens. One way in which these laws worked was by implementing different voting restrictions.
For example, some southern states would force citizens to take a literacy test. This test was aimed at African-American citizens, as many of them did not have a formal education due to their previous status as slaves. Other laws included:
1) A grandfather clause- Which stated that if your grandfather was not able to vote than you are not able to vote.
2) Poll tax- Which was a certain amount of money that people had to pay in order to vote.
