The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a government agency that is responsible for protecting both the health of the people and the environment. It was founded in 1970 by President Nixon after a growth in public concern about the impact that man could have on the environment (through the misuse of natural resources, pollution through automobile emissions, etc.)
