Ingresó al ejército en Guatemala, haciendo estudios en la Escuela Politécnica en el año de 1948, ostentando como caballero cadete el número de antigüedad 1903, y se graduó el 29 de marzo de 1953. Su carrera militar fue exitosa, hasta alcanzar el generalato.
