On the whole, civilian control of the US military is beneficial. One of the hardest parts of being a member of the US military is confirmation bias. Your experience becomes the norm. So, civilian control ensures that there is a check on the experiences of the military. This does have a downside of civilians controlling who may not understand the culture of the military.
