Answer:

The massive weight and movement of this glacier gouged out the earth to form the lake basins. About 20,000 years ago, the climate warmed and the ice sheet retreated. Water from the melting glacier filled the basins , forming the Great Lakes.

The volcanoes of many Hawaiian island are extinct because
andre [41]

Answer:

b) the Pacific plate has carried the volcanoes away from the hot spot that formed them

Explanation:

The Hawaiian islands all have volcanic origin. Some are not active, while some still are. All of these islands have been active volcanoes at one point of time, and they have been created by a hot spot that lies beneath the Pacific plate. The hot spot has such a power that it actually manages to break through the central part of the plate where its crust is the strongest and densest. As the magma manages to come out above the water, it manages to create volcanic islands. The Pacific plate though is moving, it is not static, so it drags the volcanic islands away from the hot spot, causing their extinguishing. As those islands are moved away, the hot spot creates new volcanic islands, and the process constantly continuous, resulting in a volcanic island chain.

What about drought and desertification
DochEvi [55]

Drought and desertification are closely related phenomena. Persisting over months or years, drought can affect large areas and may have serious environmental, social and economic impacts. While drought is a natural phenomenon, whose impacts can be exacerbated by human activities that are not adapted to the local climate, land degradation is the process of turning fertile land into less or non-productive land. In extreme cases in drylands this is called desertification. Land degradation and desertification are complex phenomena driven by un-adapted human activity in combination with land and climatic constraints. Inappropriate land use, such as monocultures, and unsustainable land management practices, such as deforestation, unsuitable agricultural practices and overexploitation of water resources), can cause land degradation that can be further aggravated by drought.
